New York / London Artist Books

2002-2003

Nelson photographed the facades and interiors of leading galleries in New York and London, then returned to San Francisco and invited friends and family to translate selected gallery images into drawings and watercolors. The photographs and handmade interpretations were paired in custom archival albums, one devoted to New York and one to London. The books were conceived as sculpture as much as documentation: objects that folded travel, ambition, family participation and the architecture of the art market into something intimate and portable. Blum & Poe considered taking the books to Frieze in 2003 and retained them for a period, although they were not ultimately shown there. Collaborators / contributors: Friends and family contributed drawings and watercolors; project discussed with Blum & Poe.
