The North Sea

2017-present

Downtown Los Angeles A neighborhood-scale public-realm project focused on the historic Downtown Los Angeles seafood district. Nelson and collaborators treated the district as an environmental composition, landscaping thousands of linear feet of sidewalk and developing a continuous seafood mural across roughly a dozen commercial facades over six city blocks. The project extended the environmental thinking of Valentine / Grass Room beyond the property line, using planting, painting, neighborhood identity and existing commercial history as material. Collaborators / contributors: Stacey Lynn Smith and company, mural painting; neighborhood businesses, fabricators and landscape collaborators.
