Film Paintings

2025–present

An ongoing painting series developed from photographs Nelson takes of his television while watching films at home. The images are selected less for their narrative significance than for unexpected arrangements of figures, objects and spaces: a body leaning, a clock, a room momentarily holding its objects in a particular way. Working in acrylic on unprimed hemp, Nelson uses these photographs as starting points, freely altering color, detail and composition while allowing the texture of the fabric to remain visible. The resulting paintings move between recognition and ambiguity, giving ordinary objects and incidental gestures the same pictorial importance as human figures. Familiar situations become strangely difficult to place, suggesting fragments of larger events whose meaning remains unresolved.
